Alberta pork producers are keeping a wary eye these days after a highly contagious pig virus made it's way to Canada.

Alberta Pork Executive Director Darcy Fitzgerald says it hasn't appeared in Alberta yet.

"The first time it entered into Canada was last week in Ontario. So we've really put a heightened alert on to look after our bio-security needs. And as long as keep that vigilance up, I'm sure we'll be able to stem it off as long as we can."

He says it's mainly transmitted through manure, so producers are being reminded to practice bio-security and make sure everyone coming onto their farms keeps their vehicles and shoes clean.
