Students from Ecole Edwards Elementary do their part last Thursday in celebrating Terry Fox’s legacy.

Every Year kids take part in celebrating Terry Fox, and fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation. For the kids, the day might entail different things like watching videos about Terry and going for a run.

Ecole Edwards Elementary took part in the Terry Fox tradition Thursday, September 23rd.

For Michelle Cyrzan, a teacher at Ecole Edwards Elementary. The Terry Fox festivities have a special place in her heart.

“For me personally, I have the connection. I lost my brother to cancer 10 years ago. So, for me Terry Fox Foundation is an opportunity to raise funds for radical research that could be, unfortunately, wasn’t in time for my brother, but can be there for other families down the road.”

The Terry Fox Foundation is a Canadian foundation dedicated to raising funds for cancer research. Inspired by Terry's Marathon of Hope in 1980, thousands of volunteers across the country and around the world organize walks and runs in communities and schools.  Together they raise over $20million annually for cancer research.

With covid being a factor Cyrzan went on to say that it is a little different compared to what it's usually like.

“Typically, we have a full school assembly and some of our grade four or five students will lead the assembly and get our students all excited to do a big run outside as a whole school, but just to be on the safe side this year. We did activities in class then classes ran outside in cohorts.”

Cyrzan also went on to say that they participate in the event because cancer has affected so many of our staff, students and families. It also just gives the Edwards community time to acknowledge some of the personnel struggles that have happened over the years.
