The court case against a 56-year-old Airdrie man facing sex-related charges involving a child has concluded with a peace bond.

The man, who can't be named due to a publication ban, was arrested in June of last year. He was charged with sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual assault.

Airdrie RCMP entered into an investigation in early 2019 and said the allegations stemmed back to 2003 and 2004 and involved a female child who was in the care of the accused at the time.

While the man's identity was originally made public, his name was placed under a publication ban at his first court appearance due to the nature of the relationship between himself and the complainant.

The case made numerous court appearances before coming to a conclusion on October 15.

According to Alberta Justice, the man entered into a peace bond on the charge of sexual assault while the other two counts were withdrawn.

The Federal Government's Department of Justice defines a peace bond as "a protection order made by a court under section 810 of the Criminal Code. It is used where an individual (the defendant) appears likely to commit a criminal offence, but there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence has actually been committed."

Peace bonds can be in place for up to one year and if the defendant breaks any of the conditions, they could face criminal charges.
