You may have noticed the random fields of yellow dandelions in Airdrie, don't worry city crews are on it.

According to Jeff Hughes, IPM technician for the city of Airdrie, the battle against the weeds has already started.

The city conducts weed surveys throughout the town park spaces and based on the threshold levels the crews will determine if they need to be sprayed.

Most of the surveys are done during the fall due to the weeds being more visible but they do conduct spot treatments throughout the summer and early spring.

The city uses two chemicals based on the area they need to spray.

"There are a few different chemicals we do use when it comes to spraying around sensitive areas such as playgrounds we use a more Eco-friendly chemical called fiesta."

The city posts signage to let residents now that herbicide is being used in the designated area prior to spraying.

"Currently we are targeting dandelions in areas as well and soon our invasive weed program will get underway so we can target invasive species in natural areas as well."
