A pilot and his two passengers have some stories to tell after the helicopter they were flying in experienced a mechanical issue and an emergency landing in a remote area.

Landing around Ice Lake, southwest of Sundre, an Emergency Locator Transmitter Signal was activated from the helicopter, which took Sundre RCMP to the general area.

"The RCMP received a notification from Trenton DND who monitors the Emergency Transmitter beacons that one had been activated from a helicopter. Later on, we were notified that a plane flying overhead had seen the helicopter and three individuals waving for assistance," said Sgt. Jack Poitras.

The individuals were out in the area for approximately four hours while RCMP tried to locate them.

"The problem wasn't so much the delay of getting the information, it was trying to get to the location."

All three individuals were unharmed and the cause of the emergency landing was mechanical.

"There was an issue with the helicopter and it landed - about 10 feet in the air he said he was having problems with it - then landed and it kind of bounced off the ground, and he tried to recover it. There was a problem with the lift on the helicopter and it ended up sliding and tipping over, which broke the rotor off," said Sgt. Poitras.

The helicopter was privately owned and the pilot was the owner.
