The City of Airdrie has released a video all about the Health Smart Airdrie tool it’s been working for months to develop along with other community groups.

The video highlights how the service will connect residents with local information, experts, and people to help improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Dave Jackson with the Airdrie and Area Health Cooperative said it’s a piece of technology that will help people find what the support they need.

“It’s more about the culture first and creating an awareness and understanding, and technology is helping us to do that, but it’s not just a technology project,”

The goal is to provide personalized and customized information for each and every resident of Airdrie. It’s not just about working out, it’s about making connections with others and knowing what kind of health needs you have whether it’s physical, mental, social or environmental.

Health Smart Airdrie could connect families with healthy cooking classes, support groups for those dealing with stress, or even put residents in touch with people in the community who could help teach them a new skill.

“I think most importantly is it brings all the people together and that’s what we’re trying to do here,” explained Leona Esau, intergovernmental liaison for the City of Airdrie. “We’re trying to do this so that everybody has a tribe here in Airdrie, so that they can make it much easier to focus on whatever their challenge may be in terms of health.”

It’s hoped that by putting this information in one convenient location and getting people connected to resources they need, it will help extend the healthy life expectancy of residents by 3 years.

As one of the finalists for the Smart Cities Challenge, Airdrie’s plan is expected to be highlighted across the country on April 10th.

If Airdrie wins the challenge, the city will receive a $10 million grant to implement the technology.
