Before the end of 2016, the City of Airdrie Transit Department will be installing 8 new bus shelters along major routes.

The new bus shelters are part of a three year plan to install between 20 and 24 new bus shelters.

Chris MacIsaac, Transit Coordinator, said the shelter structures will look similar to many other shelters in the Province, but will have one distinguishable difference.

"We are going with a full solar powered transit shelter, so there will be no connection into the power grid. We're going to have solar panels placed on our transit shelters and they'll illuminate the shelters throughout the evening hours."

In September, the city will be pouring the concrete pads that the shelters will sit on, and in November the shelters will begin to be installed.

In addition to the new shelters, MacIsaac said that the Google Maps bus route system will be updated to include Airdrie.

"Hopefully within the next month, people will be able to plan all of their transit trips through Google Maps and it will have integration with Calgary as well, so no matter where you are in Airdrie you can plan your trip right from your door to anywhere in Calgary."
