UPDATE:

As of 5:45 pm this afternoon, the ATCO Emergency Response Team and the Airdrie Fire Department remain on the scene of a damaged gas line in the 300 block of Coopers Drive SW in Airdrie but say that the line has now been repaired and it's safe for residents to return to their homes.

Airdrie Fire Department Deputy Chief Garth Rabel tells us the latest.  "The ATCO Emergency Response Team were able to quickly locate the damage and get it pinched off and the natural gas supply has been controlled.  RCMP and Municipal Enforcement are just in the act of taking down the barricades."

The area is located close to the site of the new Hillcrest School and Rabel says contractors using heavy machinery inadvertently struck and damaged a major gas line.

"Approximately 31 homes were contacted and any residents in those homes at the time were temporarily evacuated," Rabel says.  "There was also approximately 40 workers working within the school work site that were also temporarily evacuated and mustered off-site."
