RCMP are continuing to warn residents about telephone fraud scams involving the Canada Revenue Agency.

Cpl. Switzer of the Airdrie RCMP said that only a few months ago an Airdrie resident was scammed out of $10,000.

Switzer said the resident was told to purchase $10,000 worth of iTunes gift cards in order to resolve the debt and to avoid a warrant being issued for their arrest.

The scam usually involves one or more people contacting an individual by phone and claiming the CRA has found errors on their taxes and an arrest warrant has been issued.

In order to resolve the error, the individual is told that the CRA has bartered a deal with iTunes that will ensure a safe debt settlement can take place through the purchase of iTunes gift cards.

The RCMP said that the phone numbers being used to call people are associated to the CRA, RCMP and other government agencies when the number appears on call display.

Police said that if contacted, do not comply with the request and contact the anti fraud department with the RCMP.
