The city has announced that it will officially launch its 2023 municipal census on Saturday, April 1.

"[The census] gather[s] important information about the city’s population and demographics. A municipal census is an essential tool for future planning to better understand the growing needs of the City," the city stated.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the census, which can be completed online. Residents who complete the census online will automatically be entered to win one of 23 $100 gift cards to a local grocery store.

The census questionnaire asks for basic information such as age, gender, and the number of people in the home, as well as questions about whether the home is owned or rented and if it has a separate suite.

For those homes that have not completed their census online, enumerators will begin door-to-door collection on April, 20.

“Census data is an important component of the city’s decision-making process,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “This information helps identify where resources are needed and plan for future investments such as transportation, recreation, parks, community safety, economic development and more. I encourage all residents to take a few minutes to complete this year’s census and help us continue to support our growing city.”

All census responses are confidential, and data is only used for statistical purposes and not shared with any other agency or organization. The census was not completed from 2020 to 2022 due to COVID-19.

The population of Airdrie as of April 1, 2019, was 70,564 and reflected an increase of 3.63 per cent over 2018. It is estimated that Airdrie's current population is approximately 80,000 residents.
