29-year-old Tyson Tyler Giroux, of Red Deer, has been charged after an early morning collision that resulted in a fatality on December 2 on Deerfoot Trail.

According to police, at approximately 3:15 a.m. they responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle collision that occurred in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail near 32 Avenue N.E.

"Upon arrival, we located a severely damaged car and a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck with significant front-end damage. Moments later, we discovered a lone occupant in the driver’s seat of the car, who was subsequently declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 truck was located in the vehicle and determined to have sustained minor injuries," a police news release stated.

Giroux was taken into custody at the scene and will be charged with:

  • One count of failure or refusal to comply with demand after an accident resulting in death
  • One count of impaired operation of a conveyance causing death
  • One count of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death

The victim has been identified, however, details pertaining to the victim’s identity and the vehicle will not be released at this time as investigators are still working to complete next-of-kin notifications.

“Today’s collision shows the risk of making the wrong decisions,” said Collision Reconstruction Unit Sgt. Colin Foster. “In this case, it was the decision to drink and drive, and travel the wrong way on a roadway, which sadly resulted in the death of another motorist. The message is clear: do not drink and drive.”

Northbound Deerfoot Trail and southbound Deerfoot Trail between 32 Avenue N.E. and 16 Avenue N.E. remained closed for several hours as officers investigated the circumstances that led to the collision. Both roadways have now opened.
