The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced Friday that it has temporarily shut down the XL Foods facility in Brooks, Alberta.

According to the CFIA's website, it was determined the facility didn't have adequate controls for food safety and a number of deficiencies were found.

All products currently at this plant are under CFIA detention and control.
XL Foods will remain shut down until the CFIA is fully confident the plant can effectively manage food safety risks.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Verlyn Olson says it's frustrating that more progress hasn't been made but he's satisfied that everything that can been done, is being done.

"We need to maintain our reputation for protecting food safety," he says. "So obviously we have a concern if we have a major plant like this that is not able to process the products from our producers."

Olson says they are going to keep working to improve the system.

"It's important to keep in mind we are talking about one plant here, we have other plants in Alberta that are still producing the highest quality of beef," Olson says.

He says he has no hesitation at all about walking into a store and buying beef.

"People have been doing so and they should continue to do so," Olson states.

The CFIA says more recall notices will likely be issued as testing continues on beef processed at the X-L Foods plant.
