According to the City of Airdrie, last week's fire at Old Town Pizza House Bar & Grill was due to the improper disposal of smoking materials.

Damages are estimated to be $5000.00

On Wednesday, October 4, at approximately 3:20 p.m., Airdrie fire crews responded to reports of a structure fire at the restaurant, located on Edmonton Trail. Rocky View County Fire Department also assisted in the response.

"On arrival fire crews encountered smoke in the interior of the large, one-story restaurant. Firefighters were required to open portions of both interior and exterior walls of the building to extinguish the blaze," a media release from the city stated.

A Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) was used to ensure that the fire had not extended to other areas, while fans were used to ventilate smoke from the affected area and air quality testing was completed.

Previous social media posts by Airdrie's Fire Chief, Mike Pirie, indicated that everyone had evacuated safely and there were no injuries.

Last week, Old Town Pizza posted an update on social media, letting patrons know that a portion of the restaurant will remain closed until further notice.

"It looks like we will be ready to open the restaurant side for business today and offer pick up and deliveries as per usual. The lounge side will remain closed until further notice. We appreciate your patience while we get things up and running on the lounge side. In the meantime feel free to enjoy our fully licensed restaurant and banquet room," the Facebook post stated.

The social media post also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from both first responders and the public.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the whole crew of EMS, Firefighters, Paramedics, the RCMP and Fortis for the quick response to our fire today. We would also like to thank our amazing staff who stuck by us on this day," the post stated.

According to previous statistics provided by the Airdrie Fire Department, smoking is the leading cause of residential fires in the city.
