A couple of days of temperatures that are more seasonal for this time of the year in Airdrie have been a refreshing break after the summer of heat and smoke we've been experiencing but hotter weather will reemerge for the weekend.

According to Justin Shelley of Environment and Climate Change Canada, temperatures have been closer to normal for the past couple of days, but they're not going to stay that way and he explains why.

"By Friday we have a large upper-ridge of high pressure that's going to bring in some really warm air to the region and that's going to produce those temperatures that are going to be touching the low 30s starting on Friday and persisting through the weekend."

Friday's high is forecast to be 32, or 10 degrees hotter than what's expected today (Aug. 12).  It will get up to 33 Saturday and 30 degrees on Sunday.  While the highs might qualify for a heat warning to be issued, whether or not one will be depends on the overnight lows.

"So our heat warning criteria for the region is two consecutive days of high temperatures over 29 degrees and overnight lows of at least 14," said Shelley. "So, if the current forecast were to hold true then that wouldn't necessarily constitute a heat warning, however, it's still a day or two out so those temperatures might fluctuate in the coming days.  So, if those temperatures do come into alignment with our criteria a heat warning will be issued (today) or on Friday."

Overnight lows right now are forecast to be 11 Friday night, 12 on Saturday and 11 again on Sunday.

For those of you who would like to see it be much cooler, with perhaps even some rare rain for this summer, Shelley has some good news.

"Starting on Monday we have a cold front that's going to move through the province and drop temperatures back down to around 20 or even a bit below.  It's going to become a bit unsettled early next week so we could see a few showers and temperatures even below seasonal for this time of year."

Predicting the conditions for the rest of summer is something Shelley calls "hit or miss."  However, from what he's seeing right now, it appears that the remainder of the season will be like the first part of the summer, warmer than normal for the rest of August and into September.
