Airdrie has its very own transit terminal, as the new facility officially opened on Saturday.

Located on Main Street south of Airdrie Honda, the new transit terminal will be the central hub for Airdrie City Transit.

The transit terminal is open 7 days a week from 7:30 am until 11:00 pm, which will allow a number of buses and passengers to fully utilize it.

Some amenities included an off-street bus platform, parking for approximately 150 vehicles, a large heated shelter for those waiting for their bus, and operator facilities.

Destination signs are also in the works for the platform, according to Chris MacIsaac, Airdrie Transit Coordinator.

"We do have the capability of doing that in the main shelter where it's heated so we can put that right into that area, as well, or we can put it onto any of the posts that are right on the platform. We built that capacity and capability into the design."

This transit terminal will station every bus route in Airdrie except local route number 1, which is the route from Sagewood to Genesis Place.

"This terminal, and our growing connectivity to the communities surrounding Airdrie, reflect our city's growth and demand for service from residents," said Mayor Peter Brown in a release. "We have a long-term vision for an efficient public transit network in Airdrie, and our investment in public transit reflects this goal."

Airdrie's South Transit Terminal project not only included the construction of the Transit Terminal, but also the extension of Main Street and utilities.

The project cost an estimated $3.5 million.
