Airdrie drivers may have noticed that a portion of 1 Avenue NW is still closed.

The City of Airdrie previously closed 1st Avenue from Main Street to 1st Street for water service repairs earlier this year.

That road closure is back in effect and is estimated to remain closed until October 3rd to accommodate a storm line upgrade, which is a new project, unrelated to the first closure.

Ryan Couillard, Municipal Engineering Technologist for the city of Airdrie, explains that even though the area closure is the same, this project is different from the previous project.

"The project that we're doing out there across first, it's a stormwater upgrade project. The intent of the project is to increase our stormwater capacity through the area," says Couillard.

Responding to questions regarding the timing, with schools starting in the past week, Couillard said that many factors come into play when such projects start.

"This year was especially difficult with COVID. There are material shortages, and labor shortages," he said. "We're confident that we'll get it done here in the time that we've allotted," he said.
