Currently and probably for a while, Airdrie is under an extreme cold warning.

The warning is for the following areas:

  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
  • Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden
  • Rocky View Co. near Cochrane
  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre

This morning will be quite cold with the wind chill around minus 40.

These extremely cold wind chills will continue through the week, especially in the overnight and early morning hours.

With it being so cold there are major for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

"If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside," stated the Environment Canada press release.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

When it comes to schools being open or closed and buses not running because of the cold weather, once it hits -40, typically buses will be cancelled, of course, road conditions also matter.

For schools to be closed, it will be determined by several factors including current and forecasted temperature and wind chill, road conditions, the amount of snow and ice, school building constructions and school location. Early in the morning, before school or the bus runs, a decision will be made.

Parents will receive an email if there are any closures or buses are not running. The RVS website, social media, and app will also have the information.
