The Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association has announced that today, June 10 marks an important milestone for both the department and the city.

"Beginning today, we will have a full staffing complement of four firefighters working on Ladder 89 at the Chinook Winds Fire Station," a release from the association stated.

The news comes on the heels of the city's fire department announcing that five new paramedic firefighters joined the department after weeks of intensive training. The association underlined that this staffing evolution also signals just how much Airdrie has grown, which the association said is also an evolution of Airdrie transforming from a small bedroom community into a fast-growing, diverse city.

"The City of Airdrie has been near or at the top of the list for fastest-growing communities in Alberta for more than a decade. It isn't to manage the many competing priorities which council must balance as they build the framework for a vibrant community. These challenges aren't lost on us."

The association said that meeting National Fire Protection Association recommendations for appropriate staffing levels on Ladder 89 means that firefighters arriving in the communities within the city will be able to better meet residents' needs in, 'combatting this exponential challenge'.

"Congratulations to the newest recruit class who makes this change possible and our genuine thanks to the leadership at the Airdrie Fire Department in Chief Pirie and our city councillors who supported meeting this important benchmark."

Currently, Airdrie has three fire stations, with the newest fire station in Highland Park estimated to be opening in 2026.
