Students from L'École des Hautes-Plaines in Kings Heights spent 24 hours (Thursday 9 a.m. - Friday 9 a.m. last week) outside to bring in much-needed donations for the Airdrie Food Bank.

Christine Taylor the Marketing and Communications Manager with the Airdrie Food Bank talked about how much was fundraised.

"They collected 880 pounds of food and $2,512. With foods and funds, it's a value of $5,600."

The students have been doing this fundraiser for the past 13 years. Historically the event took place in December but they moved the date to try and get out of the snow and cold weather, unfortunately, that did not happen.

Students from grade seven up to grade 12 participated in the fundraising event.

"They did such a great job, they raised a lot of funds, brought in so much food and they had a blast. I am so proud of them for braving the cold," stated Taylor.

Taylor went on to talk about why it's great to see our younger generation helping and fundraising for an event like this.

"This is what makes a healthy community, the people in it that are willing to sacrifice their time, their talents, their energy to help other people that they don't even know."

For all the students know, they could be helping out fellow classmates mentioned Taylor.

"We are seeing more and more two-income families affected by the cost of living. Those are people that have great jobs and they were doing just fine, but now with everything so expensive, they're struggling."

According to Taylor, the food bank is still feeding over 600 families per week.

"We are just very proud of the kids and we thank them so much for doing this. They should know that they are making a true impact in their community."
