The Calgary Airport Authority presented their new noise reduction strategies at Monday (August 15) nights City Council meeting.

Jody Moseley, Senior Director, Communications and Stakeholder Relations for YYC shared that the airport is monitoring noise levels with a device that is set up by the Airdrie Walmart.

"A combination of both activity and altitude and all of those things really determine how the ear responds to noise."

In addition to monitoring the noise levels and ensuring planes are complying with regulations, airlines are also starting to install a new device called Required Navigational Performance (RNP).

RNP works with the navigation system allowing pilots to reduce the distance needed to make a decent into the airport.

"Aircraft's can come in a little bit quieter through a continued decent model, and then allowing not only that quieter but also quicker decent into the Calgary International Airport," said Moseley.

Without an RNP, pilots require between 10 to 12 nautical miles to make their approach, but with the RNP in place, pilots only require three nautical miles.

Moseley said that approximately 10 percent of airlines are utilizing the new device at YYC, but with the benefit of reduced fuel consumption and noise levels, she anticipates more airlines will be adding the new technology.
