Some Airdrie residents feel that a City Bylaw is unsafe for kids who take the bus.

The Bylaw in question is B14/2016 14.01, states that "The operator of a school bus shall not, at any time, activate alternate red or yellow flashing lights and stop arms on a school bus while the school bus is loading or unloading passengers on a highway within the City except on those highways listed in Schedule "C" and mapped on Schedule "D".".

Lynn Mackenzie with Airdrie Municipal Enforcement says this Bylaw has actually been in place since 1987, following an order from the Provincial Government to amend Traffic Laws. Alberta laws have never permitted buses to stop on a roadway with speed limits of 50km or less.

Mackenzie says the Bylaw may appear to open the door for incidents, but there already is a better plan in place.

"(At the time), The Minister of Transportation did say that in some low speed urban situations that it's better to require students to use existing traffic controls, stop signs or signals and crosswalks then to depend on a school bus warning light for protection."

Mackenzie says that stopping at an unmarked roadway could present a false sense of security for drivers and students.
