With more cases of Mumps coming up in Alberta, you might be wondering if Airdrie can follow suit.

According to Dr. McDonald from Alberta Health Services, Calgary and Airdrie aren't quite out of the woods.

"If you're not immunized, the risk is there. We know that in our population there are people that haven't been immunized or can't be immunized against Mumps."

McDonald explains that Mumps is transmitted through passing saliva from an infected person through direct contact or through sharing items like water bottles.

Although immunization is recommended for the virus, McDonald says it can still spread.

"There are people that maybe didn't get the recommended doses of vaccine, they may be still susceptible to Mumps. When Mumps comes into an area where there's susceptible people you can certainly get spread."

If you are ill with the Mumps, you're encouraged to visit a doctor and stay at home.
