Another road work project got underway yesterday (August 25).

Adam Carroll, Capital Projects Manager with the City of Airdrie, said crews are getting to work with some improvements to the intersection of Main Street and Veteran's Boulevard.

"First we're going to expand the left turn bay from the westbound to southbound movement. That's where we see a lot of traffic backup over the past few years coming off the highway. So we're actually going to be doubling the length of the left turn bay on the intersection itself. Then we're going to be doing some milling in all four legs of the intersection. We're going to be removing the asphalt and replacing it with a higher grade asphalt that will hopefully mitigate the rutting and the roughness of the road itself."

Carroll explained the City has been working with the contractor to come up with strategies to minimize delays while the project is carried out.

"For example we wouldn't start until after the 8:00 am rush hour has slowed down a little bit. We've been looking at doing a lot of the milling, where we have to work right through the intersection, at night time. That decision has not been made yet. We would do that after hours, say between 7 and midnight when the traffic volumes are a lot lower. And then the additional left turn lane is going to also be done through the day itself when the volumes on Veteran's are pretty much at their lowest."

Carroll said drivers can expect to see some delays and periodic lane closures throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall.

"We have on the schedule right now that it will be approximately one month worth of work. We've had a great summer for weather, so we really aren't anticipating any weather delays, but we always have to have weather delays in the schedule."

According to the City's website, the project is scheduled for completion by September 18.
