Old Man Winter is lurking and as a result roads are going to become slippery and dangerous.

You may be happy with your all-season tires for winter but the benefits of winter tires make you safer and could give you better gas mileage.

Research indicates winter tires have a flexible rubber on them that are less likely to get stiff in cold temperatures and have a tread that make it easier to navigate through all kinds of different road surfaces.

The Traffic Injury Reasearch Foundation (TIRF) maintains that winter tires have better traction overall at -40 Celcius than all-season tires have at +4 Celcius.

The report also mentions fuel efficiency while using winter tires due to the increase in traction and avoiding vehicle collisions.

Here are a few more winter driving tips:

  • Winterize and tune up your vehicle
  • Check tread depth on your tires
  • Leave plenty of time for yourself to reach your destination
  • Don't follow too closely behind
  • If possible, avoid travelling until roads are in better shape
