A winter storm has hit Airdrie and Rocky View hard, leading to dangerous road conditions in and out of the city.

Airdrie RCMP say that if you don't need to drive today, it's best to stay home.

"Road conditions are not ideal" said Cst. Dan Martin. "Conditions are slippery, there's heavy snowfall and the roads are obviously quite dangerous. We're just cautioning people if they can, stay home today."

Police confirmed earlier today (February 8) that at least ten vehicles were involved in a pile-up on Southbound QE2 near Didsbury.

Emergency crews have also responded to several cars hitting the ditch on major roads outside of the city.

Cst. Martin understands that some residents may need to be on the roads today and asks you to be careful.

"Exercise extreme caution, give yourself lots of time. There's lots of tow trucks and emergency vehicles on the road helping people that have been involved in collisions so please give those people a lot of room."

The City of Airdrie says that Priority 1 and 2 roads are in poor to fair condition, but no closures have been issued.
