It was a special day for families and supporters of Windsong Heights School came together for their welcome breakfast this morning (August 31st).

The breakfast was also an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming groundbreaking of the school's fully accessible playground.

The principal of Windsong Heights Penny Beaudry explains why the playground will be fully inclusive.

"Because it's designed to allow all of the kids at our school, no matter their age from 5 until 14 to participate and play. It will have access for kids who have mobility issues, coordination issues, have sensory needs. All of those things will be accommodated to allow everyone to play."

The work to get the funding for the playground has involved a lot of work from the school leadership as well the Parent Council.

Alexandra Owens from the council says they've been grateful to receive a lot of support.

"Besides the fundraising that the families in Windsong did, we were able to access the Coop community spaces grant and so from that, we wrote a grant and we had huge support from the Mayor and the MLA and it came to fruition."'

Owens says that the playground wouldn't be a reality without the help of the school's leadership.

"We worked really hard with Penny as a Parent Council and being able to have such an amazing Principal and Assistant Principals to be able to build on the vision. They went out and searched other playgrounds, we researched it so really all of the input came from her and her support staff so we're able to make this the best playground that we could."

The playground will be a tremendous feat for a school that is entering just their second year in Airdrie. Beaudry says she's amazed at how much the school community has grown and come together.

"The parent community has been tremendously supportive from day one, so accommodating and helpful. Even last year, we had volunteers in there setting up our Phys Ed storage room, helping us just be ready for the kids. We're just so blessed, we've come so far because many hands make light work."

The new fully accessible playground is set to break ground in 2 weeks and Beaudry is confident it'll be done by October.
