The high price of fuel is still a sore sight for many Airdrie drivers, wondering if relief is in sight.

According to the latest fuel outlook from Gas Buddy, prices in most of Alberta could go up by at least 3 cents in time for the long weekend.

“Often we will see prices before the long weekend go up having nothing to do with big oil companies but rather retailers who are shedding their margins”, said Senior Petroleum Analyst Dan McTeague. “If you see a dollar 27, don’t wait until Wednesday or Thursday to fill up, try to get it before Friday before they have to raise prices.”

Alberta drivers have endured fuel prices they thought they’d never see for quite some time.

McTeague said that the prices aren’t moving anytime soon due to current financial and political situations.

“The fact that the Canadian Dollar is not responding to the high oil prices again because we’re not sending our oil to a great extent to the rest of the world, we’re deeply discounting what we have, is leading to weakness in part of the Canadian Dollar. One is connected to the other and you wind up paying more at the pumps.”

McTeague also pointed to the Global Trade war initiated by the United States that’s also leading to the gas prices staying where they are.

Thankfully, McTeague expects no more huge surprises when it comes to paying for fuel.

“I, however, think that this is the high water mark for now. I don’t see prices moving up or shooting up unless there’s a major geopolitical event or a meteorological event like a Hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico along the refinery road in the United States. Barring all that, I think this is as high as prices can get for the time being.”

Prices in Airdrie have increased 34 cents from this time last year and sit in line with the Provincial average of 127 c/litre.
