A new poll from Mainstreet Research is once again showing strong support for the United Conservative Party over the governing NDP.

936 Albertans were asked which party they would vote for in the next Provincial Election with 52% of decided voters going to the UCP and 32% choosing the NDP.

President and CEO of Mainstreet Quitto Maggi said these numbers aren’t that much different from their polls in April and January.

“These numbers have returned to where they were similar in January with the UCP having a 20 point lead. Back the April, the lead had shrunk.”

Maggi also went on to talk about some of the issues that voters talked about in this new poll.

“Pipelines and the response by the NDP to what was happening with the court challenge by the B.C Government, that was viewed very positively. Now with that sort of fading from memory, the numbers are returning to where they were in January. The other issue we pointed to back in April was when Jason Kenney said that Canada is Broken.”

Among decided voters, the poll also showed a 5.4% support for the Alberta Party and 4.8% for the Liberals.

As Maggi explains, however, it’s still a tough political arena to gain ground in.

“It’s going to be an uphill battle for those two parties to make any inroads. The x-factor will be if that new conservative party starts taking significant votes away on the right from Jason Kenney, how does that all breakout. That could start being a factor later this year.”

Maggi says they will begin to track support for the Freedom Conservative Party in the fall and despite support for other parties he anticipates the 2019 election to be a battle of the UCP and NDP.
