Time is running out for the Westside Recycling Depot.

Starting on May 1, the City of Airdrie will gradually shut down the site.

"We've taken away the signs that show, you know, paper, cardboard, newspaper," said Susan Grimm, Team Leader for Waste and Recycling with the City of Airdrie. "So those are gone. Over May 1, we're going to be removing the fence, and then one by one as the bins are gone, we're not bringing them back."

As bins are sent away and the number is reduced, people using the Westside Recycle Depot will no longer need to sort their recycling as was previously required. Once the bins are all gone, the site will be effectively closed.

The City has planned for some time to close down the site, which is located in the parking lot of Home Depot, because it would no longer be needed with the introduction of curbside recycling. Grimm said with curbside pickup a reality, usage of the site has in fact gone down.

"We have definitely noticed a decrease in usage. I would say probably about 30 percent from last month to this month. It's definitely going down for sure."

According to Grimm, residents have remained neutral on the closure, but she gets the sense people understand the reasoning.

"As I watch social media, I would say that what I have noticed personally is that more people are understanding of why we're doing what we're doing there."
