A group of passengers, including a number of Airdrie residents boarded a WestJet plane on Monday, September 12, that was destined for Winnipeg.

Only half-an-hour into the flight, the pilot announced that the plane would be returning to Calgary due to the smell of smoke in the cockpit.

"We heard a bit of a noise while the flight attendants were just doing their beverage service," said passenger Ron Zuke, "So they took their carts back to their respective spots and they announced that we would be turning around."

Zuke said that once the plane had landed in Calgary runway crews came out and assessed the plane but were unable to find the source of the smell.

The plane was taxied back to the terminal and passengers were told that the flight would be delayed for an additional 2 hours while crews worked on the plane.
