As a result of the hot and stormy weather this summer, something colourful has shown up in Airdrie’s stormwater ponds.

“The Parks Crews have found this Blue-Green Algae,” says Mayor Peter Brown, “It’s in Reunion and Bayside currently. If you see it, obviously avoid it.”

City Parks says that they've found Blue-Green Algae in a couple communities including Bayside.

Although the algae occur naturally, Mayor Brown says you need to make sure to avoid any contact with the pond water.

“You don’t want to have your pets or your kids out in that stuff. Certainly, you don’t want to drink the water including your pets. Obviously, it’s not a place to swim. Kind of happens with the weather changes when it’s hot and dry.”

Signs of contact with the algae include irritation of the skin and red eyes.

Ingestion of water with the algae can also result in symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.

If you see a stormwater pond with the Blue Green Algae, you’re asked to contact the Airdrie Parks Department.
