Airdrie's experienced unusually warm weather for an unusually long period this December, and that may have you wondering if you can expect a white Christmas.

Dan Kulak, Meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it is always difficult to predict whether there will be snow on the ground over the holiday season. However, there are indications that the warm weather will persist for a few more days before things start to cool off over the weekend and early next week.

"Moving from the plus single digit temperatures for day time highs, something closer to the zero mark for maybe Saturday, going to bounce back for Sunday into the plus four degree range, but after that a general cooling trend seems to be on for that early part of next week."

After that, temperatures should be more seasonal. Kulak said long range information suggests conditions over Christmas should be seasonal or even slightly cooler than seasonal. He also explained when moving from warm weather to more seasonal weather, it is typical to see some precipitation.

"It may not be a real minus 30 type thing, we're not seeing that indication right now, but certainly something closer to normal or maybe even a little bit below normal for that Christmas-Boxing Day period. As we move from the warm air we're having right now into the cool air that is going to be coming next week, we should be seeing a little bit of snow in the area."

That's not a guarantee that things will be very snowy or that the snow will stick around for very long, but there is a chance Airdrie will have a white Christmas after all.
