Today is Earth Day and Volunteer Airdrie is hoping residents will be inspired to take part in this year’s cleanup of Highway 2.

On the first Saturday of May, the Alberta government sponsors a province-wide highway cleanup. This year, that date is Saturday May 4 and volunteers will be needed to clean both sides of the QE2 Highway from north of the Airdrie city limit to the Balzac overpass.

Volunteer Airdrie Chair Dave Maffitt says anyone wanting to get involved can sign up on the Volunteer Airdrie website or email info@volunteerairdrie.ca.

Maffitt says they typically meet at 9 a.m. in the Co-op parking lot and groups of four will clean between 2-3 kilometers each. He says volunteers can make a noticeable difference in just a few hours.

Maffitt says it’s a great family and group event to learn about the importance of protecting our environment.
