The spirit of volunteerism in Airdrie has come through once again.  This time for Canada's 150th birthday tomorrow (July 1).

Just two weeks ago, Dave Maffitt with Volunteer Airdrie put out an urgent plea on behalf of the Volunteer Sub-Committee of the Airdrie Parades and Fireworks Committee saying they needed to recruit between 60 and 70 volunteers for the parade and other Canada Day festivities in the city.

Today Maffitt says volunteers have stepped up to the plate.  "Wow, Airdrie really responded to the appeal for volunteers a couple of weeks ago.  We've filled up all the spots for the Airdrie parade in the morning, which is fantastic.  All we need now is about a dozen more volunteers to help out at the family fun festival in the afternoon."

Maffitt explains what those jobs are.  "The ones that are remaining are on the website .  As I recall we're still looking for some folks to help with litter cleanup mid to late afternoon as well as some barricade attendants as well."

Maffitt says it's still not too late to get involved as a volunteer.

The parade this year will be one of the biggest ever.  "We're setting a record for entries this year, we were sold out months in advance.   It's going to be spectacular."

The parade starts at 10:00 am.  The afternoon family fun festival begins at 3:00 pm at Chinook Winds Park and wraps up with a bigger and better fireworks display starting at dusk, around 10:45 pm.
