"Do you believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis?" If you’re living in Crossfield, the answer to that infamous question may very well be: 'yes'.

Filming is set to start in the town just north of Airdrie, for the third installment of the original Ghostbusters movies.

The major motion picture is operating under the working name “Rust City”. The movie will follow the original 1984 classic “Ghostbusters”, and its 1989 sequel “Ghostbusters II”.

The original movies were directed by Ivan Reitman, his son Jason Reitman is heading up this latest project. The younger Reitman is an actor, writer, director and producer. He is well known for this work on the films Up in the Air, Thank You for Smoking and Juno. Reitman also co-wrote the screenplay for “Ghostbusters 2020”.

Crossfield Mayor Jo Tennant said many residents are excited to have the major motion picture filming there.

“I think everybody is kind of excited to have it here, it’s a feather in our cap for sure,” she said.

She’s also hoping the large cast and crew required to film a movie this size will lead to some benefits for local businesses in and around Crossfield.

“People have to eat, they get gas, they get snacks, that kind of thing. If they’re staying here or hotels in Airdrie or hotels in north Calgary are not very far away either,” Tennant explained.

“I’m sure there’s an economic spin-off that just is a given, given the number of people and the time period they’re going to be here.”

The movie will feature “Stranger Things” actor Finn Wolfhard, “The Leftovers” star Carrie Coon, and “Captain Marvel” actress Mckenna Grace along with “Ant-Man” actor Paul Rudd is also now set to star in the sci-fi comedy.

There are rumors many of the original “Ghostbusters” cast members will be making appearances in the new film, including actors like Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver.

It’s not the first time Hollywood has come knocking in Crossfield either.

“Part of Brokeback Mountain was filmed in Crossfield as well, so it’s not like we haven’t had exposure to it,” Tennant said.

“It’s always a thrill when something in town meets their criteria and is used.”

Tennant is reminding people to respect the film crews as they work and give them plenty of space if they do intend to try and catch a glimpse of the movie magic.

According to the ACTRA website, filming will be taking place in Alberta until October. The movie is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2020.
