A torrential downpour is the only way to describe the weather Airdronians experienced on the weekend of July 15-July 17, which proves to be correct as the city received much more rainfall than originally thought.

On Sunday, July 17, Airdrie and area received 70mm of rain in a storm that quickly overpowered the storm drains.

Between Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16, up to 50mm of rain was received, making it a grand total of 120mm of rainfall over the weekend.

Dave Carlsen, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said this is uncommon for the month of July.

"This has been a particularly wet July. Now, July tends to be the wetter month of all the year but it seems like every day over the past week and half we've had thunderstorms that are just sitting there and they're raining and raining and raining."

Although the upcoming week's forecast is supposed to get better temperature-wise, Carlsen added that we could be trading one type of bad weather for another.

"So we're going to trade one type of really bad weather for possibly another. What we've seen, recently, is the thunderstorms, of course, that aren't moving. We're starting to move into a pattern now for the next week where it's going to be thunderstorms that move but produce hail."

Carlsen said residents should keep a close eye on the sky for the next week.

"That looks like the pattern that we're going to be in for a little while now and unfortunately it's one that's very common for producing hail in Southern Alberta."
