A carbon monoxide leak this morning at the apartment complex at 700 Willowbrook Road has resulted in a 12-year-old boy losing his life.

The 12-year-old boy and 2 other adult family members were taken to hospital this morning. Inspector Kim Pasloske of the Airdrie RCMP was not able to comment on the status of the other family members at this time.

After all 136 units in the apartment complex were evacuated, families were moved to Genesis Place for triage assessment and 1 additional female was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The source of the carbon monoxide leak was located and the Airdrie Fire Department was able to fully ventilate the building to allow most of the occupants to return.

"The building is now deemed safe for the residents and they were allowed to return at around 4:30 pm this afternoon," said Inspector Pasloske.

Although most people were able to return home, 6 of the units are still not able to access their home due to the ongoing investigation.

The RCMP's GIS (General Investigation Section) are currently investigating the cause of the leak and have not ruled out criminal negligence at this time.
