Anyone planning to run for the leadership of the new United Conservative Party needs to be ready to do some fundraising, just to get into the race.

The party's Leadership Election Committee released details on their process to elect the first leader yesterday (September 1st) and they call for a $75,000 entry fee for candidates, the highest in Alberta history for any party.

Leadership candidates must have been a member of the UCP or one of the legacy parties for at least six months before they file and application.  Applications for entry must be made by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 12th.

So far, four people have said they intend to run, including the former leaders of the two parties that united to form the UCP, Brian Jean of the Wildrose and Jason Kenney of the PCs.  Long time Conservative strategist Doug Schweitzer and the former President of the Wildrose party Jeff Callaway have also said they're in the running.

The Election Committee also announced that voting would take place by preferential, non-weighted ballot by phone or online over a three day period, from 9:00 am October 26th to 5:00 pm October 28th.  To be eligible to vote, memberships must be purchased by 5:00 pm, September 29th.  Members must register to vote, with proof of identity, by 5:00 pm on October 13th.  A registration website will be provided for this purpose.

The results of the vote will be announced shortly after voting closes at the Metropolitan Centre in Calgary.

The leadership candidates will face off in five debates which are planned around the province.  The party will announce more details about those once locations and times are finalized.
