Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are sending out a strong reminder to keep a close eye on children around windows.
On Saturday, August 13, shortly before 4:30p.m., EMS were called to a residence in Airdrie where they found an injured toddler outside with their parent.
According to EMS, the child fell through a window screen from the second floor, falling four to five metres before landing on the concrete below.
The child was transported to the Alberta Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
EMS are reminding parents, babysitters, and caretakers to keep all items and furniture away from windows.
Some other tips include:
- Never underestimating a child's ability to climb
- Install a safety device that only allows the window to be open for a certain amount of inches, although ensure there is a quick-release system in case of emergency
- Directly supervise your children
- Remember, screens are only meant to keep bugs out, they do not hold a child in
