It's known as the most wonderful time of the year, until it's time to look at your Credit Statement.

Christmas is usually a time where debt can rack up as you prepare to find the best Christmas gifts and help support your family as the year closes.

Donna Carson with MNP says the debt numbers have grown in Airdrie and Calgary.

"Airdrie, Calgary and Alberta...it's up approximately 37% over last year as far as people who are needing to file some type of an insolvency to deal with their situation."

Although the numbers are tough to look through, Carson says more people are taking the initiative to reach out.

"It is stressful to not know what to do. The fear of the unknown, so a lot more people are picking up the phone to sit down with someone and talk about options."

There are several ways that you can manage your debt come the new year. As for December, Carson says it's as simple as making a list and checking it twice.

"Whatever that budget may be for the next couple of weeks, stick to it! Make your list, and does that list fit within whatever budget it is that i'm going to set for myself."
