It was a night of fun for a serious cause on Friday (November 24) as amateur models strutted their stuff with help from local businesses at the "Dress For The Cure" event organized by Oranj Fitness in Airdrie.

Close to 200 people turned out at the Bert Church Theatre for the charity fashion show with the runway models wearing fashions supplie by local Airdrie businesses.

Miranda Wiltse is the Front of House Rock Star at Oranj Fitness and says all of the money raised at Dress For The Cure was earmarked for the Cancer Society.

"100 percent of the proceeds from tickets, silent auction items, draw prizes, are all going to the Canadian Cancer Society.  We're not taking any portion of this.  Our goal is to just write a huge cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society and hopefully make a difference for cancer research."

Wiltse says it wasn't difficult to choose the beneficiary for their first time event.  "The Cancer Society was chosen because it resides so closely with so many people from our community, including my manager Naomi who has also been affected by cancer directly.  It's just something that affects so many people and is such a great widespread cause and it's so easy to give back to."

The event was an overwhelming success.  The owner of Oranj Fitness in Airdrie, Naomi Keane says, although they won't know the complete funds raised by Friday night's event, preliminary estimates show that, at least, $3,500 will be going to cancer research.  Keane said that total could grow to $4,500 once all the money is counted.

Wiltse says they hope that Dress For The Cure will become an annual event in Airdrie and raise money for other worthy causes.

"We're thinking something along the lines of mental health for next year.  Hopefully, it makes a remarkable night for Airdrie and we can continue this event."
