Thousands of hungry Albertans will be receiving food boxes thanks to the generosity of one local school.

The Feed the Need packing party at Airdrie Koinonia Christian School was held Friday morning.

Students, staff, parents, and sponsors worked together in assembly lines to pack the boxes.

Airdrie MLA Angela Pitt was there to help and says it's heartwarming to see kids giving back.

"Their hearts are in the right place. They're trying to help those that have a whole lot less than they do. It's no secret that Airdrie is the best community and it's for reasons like this," Pitt says.

Airdrie City Councillor Tina Petrow was also there and says it's inspiring to see the students get involved.

"It is the epitome of what community means. This is the definition of community. It's lifting up people when they're down. Supporting people who may be in a difficult situation, and we never know why someone is in the situation that they're in. We don't know who we're helping, we just help because the need is there," Petrow says.

Donor, Partner, and International Relationships Manager for AKCS, Shellie Wilson, says the Feed the Need fundraiser fits well with the school's mission.

"They can see firsthand and participate firsthand, for some of them too at such a young age, that they learn the world's not just about them. It's about helping others and reaching out and it's just a huge impact," she says.

AKCS earlier announced they would donate 5,000 food boxes to Hope Mission in Calgary. The rest will be distributed across Alberta.
