After a string of complaints regarding odour from a feedlot east of Airdrie, Thorlakson Feedyards & TNC have released a statement addressing complaints, detailing their history and detailing their current efforts to reduce the odour.

Thorlakson stated that they have been operating about 6 km east of Airdrie for almost 50 years and started composting manure in 1987. They were approved to become a composting facility and attempted to expand its facility in 2017. However, in 2018, they found themselves not in accordance with Rock View's Land Use Bylaws. It was after that, they said, the complaints started coming in.

In the statement, the feedlot said they have been operating the same for the past 30 years without a complaint.

However, after the complaints, they said in the statement that they had invested over $500,000 in an effort to reduce any odour that might be coming from their facility.

The statement later went on to address several complaints. They said that they don't compost any kind of flesh or carcasses, they regularly test their water wells to ensure the water is safe, they did not receive any "problematic" material from other compost pads, that paunch manure is practical and environmentally safe, and that living near the facility is in no way harmful to one's health.

Thorlakson then states that they are "striving to be better". They had planned an Open House for April 12 and 13 but will have to postpone that due to wanting to show off a new aeration system after it is installed.

They encourage anyone with a complaint to contact them at complaints@tfyinc.com
