Airdrie will be just one of the many communities across the globe coming together in prayer this Friday.

The World Day of Prayer happens the first Friday of March each year. This year's Airdrie event will be hosted by the Airdrie United Church and will start at 10:30 am.

Olga Pollard, a member of the United Church Women in Airdrie says the day started out as a way for women around the world to affirm their faith in Jesus Christ and strive for wisdom to guide the actions of their daily lives. Now, she says, the World Day of Prayer is for everyone.

"Now it's open to men, women and children, and that's a change from the original day of prayer. Churches in the area take turns hosting this event, and it's world wide."

This year, the service was written by women in the Philippines with the theme "Am I being unfair to you."  Pollard says they do some research on the country.

"We do some background work on the Philippines and their traditions and what's happening in the live and work of the Philippine people. By doing this we've become familiar with what women go through in Africa, South America, Mexico and all that. I think it helps united the whole world as one."

After the service a time of fellowship with coffee and cakes will take place and Pollard says all are welcome as it truly is an inter-denominational service.
