During the Airdrie Stampede Breakfast yesterday, a very interesting visitor showed up decked out in his cowboy best.

Maxime Bernier, leader of the People's Party of Canada, travelled to Airdrie as part of his Alberta campaign. Bernier created the People's Party of Canada last year in September and is said that the party is the true conservative party.

"That's the beginning of a big change in this country. I'm speaking with people about our ideas and our platform based on freedom (...). We're the only real conservative party in this country right now."

Bernier said that he is happy with the growth his party is seeing right now.

"Here in Alberta, there are 34 ridings and we have 30 candidates right now. We'll have candidates in every riding. It's going well. We have more than 41, 000 members. For a new party, it's going very well. People want a change and we're doing politics differently. That's why people are coming to us."

Barnier narrowly lost the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada to Andrew Scheer in 2017. Later, he decided to create the People's Party of Canada to do what he said that the Conservative Party won't do.

"If you believe in the free market, you must abolish the cartel for dairy, poultry and eggs. Canadian families will save 400 dollars a year. The conservatives, they won't do that. They're working with special interest groups. They're working with 19,000 producers (...), they're not working for 36,000,000 Canadians. They want Canadians to pay more for their eggs, their poultry and their milk, so they're not real conservatives. They don't believe in the free market."

He said that the Scheer Conservative Party won't fight for the pipelines like the People's Party of Canda will.

"If you're a real conservative, you will fight for pipelines and they're not. Andrew Scheer is saying right now that he wants to build a corridor. How are you going to do that? He won't be able to do it. He needs to use the constitution and impose a pipeline on Quebec and on B.C after consultation," said Bernier.

"We're the only party who won't sign the Paris Accord. Andrew Scheer wants to follow the Paris Accord targets and he will impose more regulations on businesses and he will impose a carbon tax on the big emitters, like Trudeau, like the Greens. So, they're all the same. We're very different."

Bernier said that the People's Party of Canada is the only choice for true conservatives.

"We have a strong platform based on principle, on individual freedom, personal responsibility, respect and fairness. And, we won't comprise our principals. That's why people are coming with us because they are fed up with traditional politicians like the (...) conservatives, the liberals and the NDP."

With the splitting of conservatives parties, like the Progressive Conservatives and the Wildrose, there could be concerns for vote splitting in Alberta. Bernier, however, said this was not a major concern.

"Here in Alberta, I don't think Justin Trudeau will have more seats. Actually, they will lose their seat that they have. The question in Alberta is, do you want to vote for your values? Do you want to vote for what you believe in? We're the only real free-market conservative party. The choice is between the fake conservative, Andrew Scheer's, and us."

Bernier attended the event with Banff-Airdrie Candidate Nadine Wellwood, who said the local residents of Banff and Airdrie deserve a voice in Ottowa.
