The snowstorm that ravaged Southern and Central Alberta over the last 48 hours is a cold reminder of the importance to be prepared.

Hundreds of travellers travelling westbound on highway 1 were stranded for up to ten hours last night due to the weather conditions.

In events like these, the importance of emergency kits become very clear.

Kevin Weinberger with the Airdrie Fire Department says it's important to have a variety of items with you at all times.

"Make sure you keep your gas tanks over half full, bring blankets, food, candles these items might just save your life."

During emergency situations especially those on highways, it's crucial to stay in your vehicle.

"Stay in your vehicle you never know what could happen, especially like yesterday people are sliding all over and you're safer in your vehicle than being hit as a pedestrian. If you're stuck we can get tow trucks and we will certainly come and help you."

It's important to realize that civilians are not the only ones at risk when it comes to emergency situations, sometimes the first responders are in an even greater risk trying to come to help you.
