With new schools set to open next year, the Rocky View School Board got an update on transitions for the students, parents and staff at last Thursday's (March 2) board meeting.

The new Windsong Heights School in Airdrie and Fireside School in Cochrane, along with an addition to Herons Crossing School in Airdrie, are set to open in the fall, and superintendent Greg Luterbach presented on both past and future activities intended to ensure a smooth transition to the schools. The update was not on the construction of the school buildings.

"That was mostly just an update to let everyone know that we are being mindful and there are processes that are happening behind the scenes in terms of transitioning students and their families to the opening of those new schools," said Colleen Munro, Chair of the Rocky View School Board.

Luterbach outlined a number of upcoming activities, including welcome barbecues for students that could include tours of the new schools, information evenings and letters to parents, and meetings between the Human Resource department and staff members. The dates for the activities have not been finalized yet, but Munro said they will happen before schools dismiss for the summer.

"Those activities are meant to take place before the school opens, so they'll be happening this spring up until the end of the school year, and then there'll be more happening when the schools open in September."

Dates for the transitional activities will be shared once they are finalized.

Behind the scenes, Munro said administrators for the two new schools are hard at work making sure they are ready to open in the fall, doing everything from hiring staff to ordering furniture.

"The two new principals for the schools are actually here at the Education Centre now, working on the plan for the schools."
