Stories earlier this week about two Canadian children that received second degree burns after using Banana Boats Kids sunscreen has many thinking about sun safety.

Dr. Jason Cabaj, Medical Officer of Health in the Calgary Zone with AHS, wasn't able to speak to different types of sunscreen, but he did have some tips on how to keep yourself and your children safe in the sun this summer. The best way is to avoid peak periods of heat, when UV index is high, is the best thing to do. If you have to be out, there are ways to protect yourself.

"Wearing clothing that covers your skin, that's the more effective method than sunscreen, but any exposed areas as well, using a broad spectrum sunscreen that's protective to at least an SPF of 30 is recommended as well as being water resistant."

Dr. Cabaj also said proper application is key to protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.

"Whatever type of sunscreen people are able to apply effectively is going to provide more protection. There's obviously a variety of application methods, and finding a formulation that's comfortable for you and your kids, and that you're going to use, provides the best coverage.

Dr. Cabaj pointed out that many people forget to protect their eyes from UV rays, which can be done with a good pair of sunglasses.

When looking for a brand of sunscreen, Dr. Cabaj said there are things you can look for.

"It's looking for broad spectrum protection against all types of UV radiation. That will be labeled on the sunscreen. And then water resistance is an important piece as well."

With regards to the Banana Boat Kids sunscreen that caused the uproar, a representative from Health Canada told Discover Airdrie that they are investigating the two incidents and will have a statement in the next few days. Currently, the product has not been recalled by Health Canada, and it's available on shelves at some Airdrie stores.
