On Wednesday (February 22), a group of students from St. Martin de Porres High School took part in Women in Engineering Day at the University of Calgary, an opportunity for grade 10 and 11 girls to learn more about the field of engineering.

Nichole Lesperance, the teacher that organized the trip, explained that the event is meant to show young girls the different types of engineering that exists, and inspire them to join the field. Lesperance said her group got to take part in a number of activities and presentations, and the day was a hit.

"The group that I took really enjoyed it. We have some that are thinking of engineering, thinking of medicine. Some that just wanted to go explore."

Isabel Miscoi, a grade 11 student from St. Martin that is considering a future in engineering, said the day gave her clarity on not only the opportunities that exist in the field, but also which align with her interests.

"I kind of have a clearer idea of what kind of jobs I would be okay with in the future, and what kind of jobs I'd want to stay away from if I get into the Engineering Department after high school."

Miscoi had the chance to take part in a demonstration from engineers that work with the Children's hospital, where she used a brain interface to drive a car with her mind.

Lesperance said the event was an important way to show the girls what opportunities exist in engineering, a field dominated by men.

"If you can show girls, well no, it is actually exciting, then they'll want to do it. They just have to be aware that those opportunities are out there, and that's what this day was all about."
