After the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash nearly ten months ago, the community of Airdrie and much of Canada rallied behind Airdrie's Straschnitzki Family including a local hotel.

The Wingate Hotel in Airdrie offered free accommodations to the Straschnitzki family while their house was being renovated to meet Ryan's mobility needs.

The home was supposed to be finished in October, however, the project had taken longer than expected.

According to Ryan's father Tom Straschnitzki, he and the hotel had come to an agreement for the family to pay the hotel room tax and GST on the three rooms they had been staying in.  Tom later found out that the hotel had been charging their insurance company full price since October which equalled roughly $12,000 a month.

"When we arrived July 4th they offered to put all six of us up for free until October 6th when the home renovation would be completed. Obviously, it wasn't so we renegotiated to pay for the hotel tax and GST because we felt bad for staying there for free and so we gave them our insurance number but we later found out the hotel had been charging our insurance company full price."

After finding out the hotel had been charging his insurance Tom attempted to get in touch with the owner. According to Straschnitzki, that's when things took a turn.

Straschnitzki also claims that not only were they being charged full price but the hotel was renting out the exact same rooms to other guests for significantly lower.

"When we found out we were getting ripped off, we had some buddies phone and ask about the same rooms and they were offered the rooms for $70."

The Straschnitzki family is still staying at the hotel.

Air 106.1 has reached out to hotel management multiple times and have not received any comment.
